Does PPF really stop stone chips or just reduce them?

I work near ICAD and the amount of gravel and debris flying around from trucks is unreal. My front bumper is basically a warzone of tiny chips at this point. I'm looking into film as a solution but I want realistic expectations, not sales talk. I found a Quick primer on paint protection film for car owners near ICAD that explained how the film absorbs impacts, which makes sense, but I'd like to know from people who've had it for a while, does it actually stop chips completely or do you still get damage through the film? And what happens when the film itself gets hit hard, does it tear or does it self heal like I've read?
