Lads, I’m thinking of getting my first large tattoo in a Japanese style, but I’m a bit stuck for ideas. I want something meaningful, not just a nice image for the sake of it. I like dragons, koi carp and samurai, but I’m not sure how to bring it all together into one piece or which part of the arm would suit it best.

If it’s your first large piece, I’d suggest starting with a koi carp. It has a clear meaning, perseverance and moving forward. You could go for a half-sleeve from shoulder to elbow, add some waves and a bit of cherry blossom. A dragon could always be added later if you decide to extend it.

I had a Japanese-style sleeve done about three years ago. I was torn between a dragon and a samurai at first, but my artist advised choosing one main figure and building the background around it. In the end, I went with a dragon as the centrepiece, with clouds, wind bars and chrysanthemums below. It works well because the composition was planned properly from the start. The key is finding an artist who genuinely specialises in traditional work rather than copying images off the internet.
